Inspiring generations of artists for over 50 years!
What a three-, five- and eight-year-old can each manage, and the box that suits them. Grown-ups included.
The question we hear most is some version of: is my child old enough? The honest answer is that it depends on which set. A loose wheel inside a loose ring asks for two steady hands and a fair amount of patience. A jumbo gear in a fixed frame asks for almost none. Here is how we would choose.
At this age the win is a spiral that actually appears. Jr. gears are jumbo-sized, the gear frame is built into the desk, and the washable markers are thick enough for a fist grip. The Bluey and Toy Story editions add sticker sheets, which give a finished spiral a second life as a picture.
Five-year-olds want to do it themselves and are quickly put off by a gear that slips. Cyclex solves this by sealing the stencil wheels inside the tool and advancing them automatically. The Bluey Cyclex Studio and the character Cyclex Clips are made for ages 5 and up. Travel Spirograph and the Mini Gift Tin are good next steps: real wheels, with the ring held for you or small enough to manage.
By eight, most children can hold a ring down, keep teeth engaged and count holes. This is the age our classic gear sets are recommended for. The Design Set Tin is the gentle start with seven wheels. The Deluxe Set and the Kit with Markers give the full nineteen.
Older artists tend to want either more complexity or more heft. Super Spirograph brings Spiro-Tracks and jumbo paper. Mandala Maker brings a 13-inch frame and stencils. The Die-Cast Collector's Set brings metal wheels that feel like instruments. And the Retro Deluxe is for anyone who wants the box they remember.
